This means that when you boot from the DVD you will see a desktop with an option to install the Operating System - this is shown by a disk symbol on the desktop. The Firewire connectors viewed externallyĤ) Before you install the Linux Operating System make sure that the scanner switched on and connected to the PC with a firewire cable.Ī) The DVD you burned is a 'live' system.

Install this in the computer before installing an operating system so that the OS installation can recognise its existence and install drivers for the cards it detects.įirewire 400 card goes in to a white PCI slot 📷 Graphics card with HP 60-Pin LFH to 2xDVI Male DL139A adaptorģ) The LS-8000 comes with a PCI firewire card. The storage on the computer is 2 x 500GB drives, which is more than adequate. Mine uses a DL139A which is a 60-pin LFH male to 2xDVI Male. The workstation route works well but if you go this route then watch out for the graphics card port on some HP machines as they don't have conventional DVI / VGA output - you may need to get an HP to DVI / VGA adaptor. As the machine is meant to last some time I found one with a passively cooled graphics card that doesn't require a fan and has less to go wrong than a non-workstation (i.e. The old HP workstations are reliable and well built, I have a Z600 machine from 2009. I chose the top link 'Cinammon' for a 64-bit computer.Ģ) The next thing was to get an older computer to dedicate to Linux & Scanning. This is free and can be downloaded from : Īs with all things Linux there is a wide choice of downloads with the user being expected to know what they want and the most useful choice being at the top of the list. Practical steps to achieve a working system:ġ) Get a copy of the 'Mint' Linux distribution and burn it to a DVD. My personal experience is that the easiest distribution for working the LS-8000 is 'Mint', even if its unpleasant log-in screen tries to give the user an migraine or epilespy. Not all of these distributions are easily compatible with the Nikon LS-8000 (and I assume the LS-9000 but I don't have one of those) and was frustrating to get a working system with an unhelpful OS. The first thing to note about Linux is that it has a variety of 'distributions' including 'Ubuntu', 'Slackware', 'Mint', 'Red Hat'. I have set up a Linux system to use Vuescan (pro version) and a Nikon LS-8000, so this maybe useful if that's something you want to try. This just leaves Linux as an option for a modern Operating System, but Linux can be a bit of a challenge sometimes. Firewire has only limited support in the newer Windows systems.

Operating system support for firewire is diminishing and has mostly disappeared from modern Apple machines to be replaced by 'Thunderbolt' (I have never used Thunderbolt but an Apple sales person told me it didn't work so well with older firewire 400 devices). Older Nikon scanners like the LS-8000 use a firewire connection, it is the only connection available.

We reverse engineered the Plustek OpticFilm 8100 driver and included it in VueScan so you can keep using your old scanner.Want to keep using your Plustek OpticFilm 8100 on Linux?.And it says on one page that linux isn't supported, and another page says that it is. Either way is simple & straight forward.Īnd that's when the hell begins: it doesn't appear to connect to the scanner, provides basic suggestions (turn it on & off, etc). Or you can install it via the download page. You can install it via the command line, or very simply on the above page right off the download button. So, VueScan says that it works on linux:
